Nursing and Midwifery Excellence Awards
Helene Metcalfe, lecturer and third year coordinator in the School of Nursing, Midwifery and Postgraduate Medicine was announced the winner of the “Nurse Educator of the year 2009” at the Nurses and Midwives Board of Western Australia Nursing and Midwifery Excellence Awards at the Burswood Entertainment Centre on Saturday 29 August.
Helene was nominated by her peers for this award and subsequently selected by a panel of judges. The panel acknowledged her commitment to teaching and learning, her enthusiasm for nurse education and her approach to supporting and mentoring colleagues.
Helene has been a lecturer at ECU for 6 years and is the first nurse to enroll in a Doctor of Education. Her thesis will look at the changing curriculum.
Sarah Sheehan, an ECU midwifery student in the 2007 cohort has a voracious appetite for education and knowledge and has been rewarded with being chosen as the Graduate Midwife of the Year at the Nursing and Midwifery Excellence Awards 2009. Not only was Sarah studying the midwifery course at ECU and working within her partnership hospital at St John of God, Murdoch as a student midwife, she was also pursuing additional studies in journalism and has since used those skills in writing comment on midwifery issues.
