Leadership Certificate Program Launched
The School of Nursing, Midwifery and Postgraduate Medicine launched its Leadership Certificate Program for Semester Four Nursing students this month. A program developed by Dr Joyce Hendricks and Associate Professor Moira Sim following a successful application for an Edith Cowan University Teaching and Learning Grant.
Ten students were chosen to take part in
the program which involves attendance at
a Leadership Workshop where facilitators
work with students to identify personal
strengths and weaknesses related to
leadership skills. Students are then
given individualized programs covering
six hours of support and complete a 30
hour leadership project with a Leadership
Mentor. Those selected for the program
commended the School for its initiative,
commitment and support in providing an
innovative program for students.
Leadership is an integral attribute of professionals in an environment of change and dynamics such as health care. Healthy leadership is one of the six areas captured in the WA Health Strategic Intent 2005-2010 and as such Leader Mentors are chosen from not only participating academics but from the health industry. During their 30 hours of project time, students work with Leader Mentors to develop and lead a project to completion in order to learn skills, knowledge and attitudes that will be of personal and professional benefit as well as providing experiences of leadership in the “real world”.
Participation by students in this program
is curricular and extends over a period
of two semesters. This ensures that
those selected for the program are self
motivated and responsive to the dynamic
nature of the healthcare environment.
The program enhances students’
ability to reflect on personal leadership
qualities, critically appraise, work within
a team as well as take responsibility for
ensuring the achievement of team goals.
