ECU’s School of Nursing, Midwifery & Postgraduate Medicine offers an interactive orientation that is designed to assist you with a smooth transition into University studies.

Nursing attracts a high percentage of mature age students and our orientation has been designed to give students an opportunity to commence their studies with a degree of confidence rather than anticipation.  It is an excellent opportunity to meet fellow students, become acquainted with the staff and gain some academic skills to assist students in those first vital weeks of study.

The two day program includes the following:

  • An introduction to the University.
  • An overview of the Nursing program e.g. course structure and units.
  • An introduction to the Head of School and first year academic staff and first year co-ordinator.
  • The Student Support Officer provides student information such as an overview of the Anatomy Museum, cut off dates for HECS and Academic Penalty, assignments, examinations, scholarships, disability support, support services and where to go for assistance.  This includes an introduction of current student groups.
  • A brief overview of support services is provided by the Student Counsellor, Equity Officer, Careers Advisory Service, Student Guild and Student Central.
  • The Academic support sessions for students include IT and computer access.
  • The Library staff conduct introductory sessions to the Library, including computing, referencing and library searching online.
  • The Faculty Learning Adviser holds workshops on academic writing and preparation for University and will advise students on other topics of interest that will run throughout the coming semester including exam anxiety workshops.
  • Students are also taken on a tour of the campus and Nursing building 21 and shown how to locate key areas such as the Anatomy Museum, Demonstration Wards, Science Labs, classrooms and lecture theatre complex.

Feedback from previous students has proven the two day Nursing Orientation to be successful in giving students a boost to start their academic learning and has provided students with confidence to tackle those first assignments.
