Study Abroad
Take the Opportunity to Study Abroad or Interstate!
Opportunities for cultural exchange exist for ECU nursing students. Second and third year nursing students from Schools of Nursing in Gjovik, Hedmark, Oslo and Stavanger in Norway, and from the University of Vermont in the USA, regularly come to ECU on an annual basis to undertake a semester’s study with ECU nursing students in the Bachelor of Science (Nursing) program. Students are enriched by the opportunity. They not only meet and study with other Australian students, and care for patients within a different health care system, but also get to travel to exciting destinations. Their experience presents a personal challenge and in all cases, the rewards are beyond measure.
Nursing students enrolled in the School of Nursing, Midwifery and Postgraduate Medicine are also offered the opportunity to undertake their clinical elective (3-5 weeks practicum) prior to graduation. Mutual agreements with Schools of Nursing in Wailalak and Chang Mai in Thailand and Worcester College of Health Sciences in England are preferred partners.
All you need to do is communicate your expression of interest (EOI) to the Undergraduate Course Coordinator and International Office at ECU (ECUI) prior to your final semester of study and commence planning. Lead in time for an exchange will normally require 12 months from time of EOI to actual exchange overseas. Applicants may also apply for a semester exchange to a comparable Interstate Bachelor of Nursing program, eg, Monash University in Melbourne.
Please note there is a fundamental difference between being an ECU study abroad student or ECU exchange student.
Study Abroad Student: means an enrolled full time nursing student (currently on “good standing”) who applies to a reciprocal institution to undertake a semester of study. All costs associated with the program (including accommodation, tuition and travel) are born by the student.
Exchange Student: means an enrolled full time nursing student (currently on “good standing”) who applies to a reciprocal institution to undertake a semester of study. Costs associated with the international study abroad program tuition fees are exempt based on the number of exchange students between ECU and reciprocal institution. Students who wish to seek additional financial assistance and meet specified selection criteria, may apply for funding for travel and/or accommodation to Head of School.
